Stumbling Blocks: You think you have time
The master asked his student how the teachings were working in him.
“Very well,” the student replied. “It is a slow process of course, I am busy with many things and the teachings are challenging, but I feel I am making good progress.”
“You know what the trouble is?” the master said with a smile. “You think you have time.”
The illusion that we can put off our devotion to finding the Truth to some moment in the future is the biggest obstacle for spiritual awakening. It is a trick of the egoic mind, the hiss of the serpent that would keep us bound. The love of Truth cannot wait to be kindled at some more opportune moment because the belief in time is itself not true.
We live in a culture that is under the enchantment of time. It keeps us asleep in our glass coffins like the fairy tales of old. We are trained from a very young age to invest more heavily in the past and the future than we do in the present. Because of the weight of this thought form it takes a lot of energy in the other direction to turn over the leaf of this illusion. The fastest ways is to place ourselves within a community of guides and companions who create a field of Presence. By experiencing Presence and generating it ourselves we can overcome decades of conditioning in very short order.
Presence is not a jaw-clenching discipline. It is actually a lightness of heart. The story that the spiritual path is “hard work” is another trick of the ego. Many egos with spiritual clothing speak at length about the hard work it will take to climb the mountain to the exalted place from which they are speaking. But those who truly know the Truth are walking with the crowd whispering, “we are already here.” It is in the subtle flow of water rather than the might of the tempest that awakening occurs.
How do you cast off the enchantment of time? You must fall in love with the Truth. The Truth is a wildly passionate lover knocking on the door of our heart. In the enchantment of time instead of opening the door we are lost in the dream of what it will be like when our beloved finally arrives. Today is the day to open the door and live the dream into being. Are you ready?
The minute I heard my first love story,
I started looking for you, not knowing
how blind that was.
Lovers don’t finally meet somewhere,
they’re in each other all along.
